Webscan Unveils RSS and Composite Bar Code Verification

webscanWebscan, Inc, announces the release of new RSS and Composite bar code verification for the TruCheck Bar Code Verifier product line. The new capability includes the ability to verify the full family of RSS (Reduced Space Symbology) bar codes including linear, stacked and composite symbologies. This represents another industry first for Webscan as TruCheck is the only system available anywhere that supports the RSS family!

RSS is a new bar code developed by the Uniform Code Council for applications that require more information in a smaller space than allowed with existing symbologies like UPC or Code
128 bar codes. Many variations in the RSS family are available to satisfy a variety of end-user needs. RSS represents an evolution of the UPC code and can include variable data for lot traceability, expiration dates and more. RSS is emerging in a variety of applications in the healthcare field and in retail sales of meats and produce.

TruCheck’s unprecedented accuracy and user-friendliness is now available for users and printers of RSS and Composite Symbologies. TruCheck offers automatic ANSI grading of bar codes with just the touch of a button. A moving laser beam covers the bar code from top-to- bottom achieving multiple scans. Results are accurate and repeatable because outside influence, such as from an operator, is removed from the verification process. There is no wand or hand-held device to introduce variations.

Webscan’s TruCheck is the first hands-free bar code verifier to operate on both linear codes (UPC, EAN, 128, Code 39, etc.) and 2D symbologies such as PDF417. With the new capabilities, Webscan has extended the TruCheck’s symbology coverage to RSS and Composite symbologies. Composite symbologies are unique in that they combine a linear bar
code with a PDF417 component.

All current TruCheck systems are upgradeable to the new RSS capability. “When companies invest in our technology, they can rest assured their systems will not become obsolete.” states Glenn Spitz, President of Webscan, “We are committed to keeping our customers on the leading edge of bar code verification capabilities.” Existing TruCheck Model 201 users can download a free software upgrade from the company website. TruCheck Model 101 users can have their systems expanded to include the new RSS capabilities through a factory upgrade.

Webscan has been actively involved in the RSS symbology launch and pilot testing. In a case study performed by Abbott Laboratories and St. Alexis Hospital, under supervision of the Uniform Code Council, Webscan’s TruCheck bar code verifier played a key role in proving that unit dose RSS labels could be printed, verified and scanned. The full case study can be reviewed at the Uniform Code Council website, www.uc-council.org. Webscan’s website is www.webscaninc.com
